Best Known For

Set in a seaward garden, bordered by breeze-swept shores, ‘Max Wadiya’ takes guests far away, to another time, another life. Combining an antique and artwork inspired interior theme with surreal beach views, the cosy seaside retreat keeps one spun to a dream where the measuring of time is done by the rising and setting of the sun.

The Experience

Spread across two wings, this luxury boutique hotel in Ambalangoda consists of a villa and 2 suite offerings. Designed to sleep 6, The Villa which houses 3 bedrooms is flanked by sea-facing verandas. Its ground floor is furnished with a bedroom and a living area whilst the upper floor offers 2 bedrooms, a TV corner and library. All rooms are appointed with gracious colonial furniture. Unraveled in a separate wing adjacent to the stylish villa is the ground floor suite, Tangerine and the upper floor suite, Blue - both of which sport an all-glass front, facing the ocean. The Tangerine Suite opens onto a garden veranda on one side and an inner courtyard on another whilst the Blue Suite features a garden-and-horizon-view balcony.

While home-cooked Sri Lankan classics are at the forefront of the menu, ‘Max Wadiya’ also dishes out an array of Western and Asian cuisine. A pellucid swimming pool reposes amid coconut palms, on the ocean’s edge, along with an attached baby pool appointed with water toys. Set by the pool, the massage pavilion offers soothing massages and Ayurvedic treatments. Other recreational choices at this boutique retreat in Sri Lanka include a library, Yoga and meditation facilities.

Around and About

A hinterland workaday village on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, Ambalangoda is at the fore-front of the island’s souvenir scene. The stronghold of puppet and mask craft, the artisan oasis is dotted with workshops where traditional artists transform wood into curious artworks that contain the essence of southern handcraft aesthetics, handed down from generation to generation. The mask-filled galleries at the Ariyapala Museum, the local Aladdin’s Cave, evoke exotic sensations in one’s mind. Traditional devil dances materialize from the moon-lit haze of the night, giving the finishing touch to the exotic appeal of the ancient village. The untouched beaches of Ambalangoda that know the magic of sunrise and sunset crafts the perfect setting to kick back and unwrap oneself from dull daily routines.

As you gaze far into the sunset west, tinges of raspberry red and black current violet race across the skies. Ah, those long, wondrous twilights…
