Helga’s Folly Residence

“The Gods of Music, Art and Drama have created the impossible” - Carl Muller.

Located roughly 130 kilometres from Colombo, overlooking the Dunumadallawa Forest, ‘Helga’s Folly Residence’ is many things. A residence rich in evocative aesthetic and regal, timeless grandeur, quite similar to an old British countryside house, a whimsical, tropical walkthrough of flamboyant paintings and art, a world of colonial teapots, Hollywood gossip and Marxist revolutions and a trove of local heritage heirlooms.

Best Known For

‘Helga’s Folly Residence’, plays on the concept of unorthodox yet striking accommodation, immersing one in tales of the past colonial era and one woman’s passion for the expression of story through haphazard art: the name behind the Residence, Helga de Silva Blow Perera. The curiously magnificent air with which the Residence is presented has, over the years, drawn in distinguished figures, from Vivian Leigh to Mahatma Gandhi.

The Experience

Where quaint, old world charm meets extravagant fabrics and gaudy furnishings in an explosion of rioting colour. Roughly 40 air-conditioned rooms are odes to Sri Lankan heritage and history and are appointed with four-poster beds, a balcony, sofa and a private bathroom with free toiletries.

One of the Residence’s greatest masterpieces is its living room; from drawings of the Zodiac beam scaling the roof to the chequered floor and from vintage ornamentals to paintings and baubles spontaneously strewn. Colours take the reins in every corner of this accommodation in Kandy, flanked by silk and satin curtains, scribbled verses, stag head wall pieces and a jungle-of-art theme reflected in positioned mirrors.

The restaurant serves up mouthwatering culinary offerings sourced from local produce. Opt for a little something from the bar after. Explore, discover and unwind. For the outdoor enthuse, a swimming pool offers laid-back respite while books, playing cards and an in-house cinema captivates those indoors.

Around and About

Marked as the hill capital of the country, Kandy resonates with a quiet, culture-steeped appeal and harbours a history well-associated with the colonial era, monuments of which can still be seen today. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is a site of significant religious importance while the Hantana Tea Museum affords an up-close look at the history of Sri Lankan tea cultivation. Take in the rippling beauty of the Kandy Lake or the Mahaweli River or immerse in a hub home to 4,000 species of flora, The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya.
