While You’re There

Majestic cascades await:

Being perched 589-metres above sea level, Nawalapitiya is home to a number of majestic cascades of water flowing down towards the coastal areas of Sri Lanka. Waterfalls such as the Galboda Falls, Kadiyanlena Falls and the Sudugala Falls always catches the eye of many a traveller when traversing through the town. Apart from its exquisite aesthetics, a majority of these falls prove to be major tributaries to the Mahaweli River, the largest river in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

Due to its perch high in the green mountains of the Kandy District, Nawalapitiya is blessed with untarnished natural beauty that has resulted in the town’s unpolluted fresh air. Coupled with a friendly and accommodating society that makes you feel right at home, you will surely question your plans on leaving the peaceful town.

Something out of the ordinary:

Nawalapitiya is not known for any manmade wonders, however, there is one that harks back to the colonial days and will surely intrigue many a traveller who passes the monument. Located on the outskirts of the town, is the Moda Palama (Fool’s Bridge) that is reminiscent to an upside down bridge. It is believed that the engineer who made it committed suicide, as he was ridiculed for his poor design. Although looking like an upside down bridge, the bridge is really built in a ‘deck-truss’ design that is very rare in the country. Certainly something to check out, while in Nawalapitiya.
