Nihonbashi Honten

Cooking up the allure of authentic cuisine hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun, in the heart of Colombo, is ‘Nihonbashi Honten’.

The Menu

Deeply rooted in Japanese culinary values, ‘Nihonbashi Honten’ combines Sri Lanka’s homegrown harvests and exclusive Japan grade Tuna with intriguing Nihon gastronomic traditions. The retreat’s lunch menu is largely comprised of high-end Teishoku-style set meals: From Chicken and Egg, Pork Cutlet and Fried Shrimp inspired Rice Bowls and Noodle inspired recipes like Zaru Soba and Soy Sauce Ramen, to Tofu Steaks and meat and seafood centric meals like the pork dumpling based Gyoza, grilled salmon centered Shio Jake and chicken inspired Karaage, varied flavour combinations are hosted.

Offered during dinner, the sumptuous Course Menus at ‘Nihonbashi Honten’ are deeply evocative of Japanese dining rituals: Cold appetizers like Edamame and Gomae, followed by hot appetizers like Ebi Tempura and Chicken Soup Daikon, prelude main dishes, such as Sashimi Platters, Blow Torched Salmon Teriyaki and King Mackerel Teriyaki. A hardwood charcoal grill illuminates the garden, turning out Grilled Corn, Salt Grilled Prawn, Squid Wings and Grilled Pork. Inspired by the sauce-topped, thinly-sliced sea bream goodness of Japan, the Sashimi collection offers Salmon, Cuttlefish and White Fish versions. From Egg, Squid and Trevally Nigiri, to Crabstick, Cucumber and California Maki, varied Sushi expressions are captured.

In an ode to the prized Wagyu Beef recipes hailing from Kuroge, wasabi olive oil infused Beef Steaks, sesame sauce dressed Shabu Shabu and rock-cooked Ishiyaki Beef dishes are primed. The Tempura and Agemono series host Crab Croquets, Curry Leaf Tempura and Fried Pork Fillets while the in-kitchen Teppan turns out Seafood Pancakes, Tofu Steaks and Grilled Cuttlefish. The rice and noodle department plates out an array of Curry and Fried Rice, Onigiri Rice Balls and Noodle classics, including Udon, Soba and Ramen.

The Experience

Dovetailed with serene rock gardens and bamboo walls, ‘Nihonbashi Honten’ encapsulates a peaceful and quiet Zen aesthetic. Diners can choose from 7 tastefully-appointed private rooms, designed to reflect Japanese horigatsu style. Unravelled under a bamboo canopy, the outdoor ‘Yakitori Garden’ crafts the perfect setting for evening drinks and chicken treats.

Dobin mushi – a soup steamed in a small teapot. Ah, that shitake-accented seafood flavour and nourishing fragrance…
