Ministry of Crab

Nestled at Colombo’s prestigious Old Dutch Hospital, the seafood smorgasbord at ‘Ministry of Crab’ is inspired by humongous lagoon crabs, sourced from the Northern coastal belt of the tropical isle.

The Menu

Celebrating the fabled crustacean in variations ranging from 500g size to the massive 2kg crabzilla, the crab department pays tribute to prized recipes: Exotic local spices dance through in Curry Crab; Varied types of chilies crash together to amp up the warmth in Chili Crab; Notes of pepper heightens the depth in Pepper Crab; Tender, sweet meat meets buttery warmth in Butter Crab; and Italian olive, Sri Lankan chili and Japanese soy sauce come together to choreograph Garlic Chili Crab. Beckoning to the prawn aficionado are local spice-centric King Prawn Bisque, salt-grilled Ebi Shioyaki and traditional Clay Pot Curry Prawn.

These dishes are paired with traditional Wood Fired Bread, Rice and Coconut Sambol, as well as, veggie offerings like Button Mushroom and Kang Kung Garlic. Soy-sauce-jazzed Oyster Sixers and Japanese-style Clams make delish starters. The high-end restaurant’s grainy goodness includes Garlic, Prawn, Kani Chahan, Leek Fried and Chicken Curry Rice.

The Experience

Nestled at the 400-year-old, preserved Dutch Hospital in Colombo 1, ‘Ministry of Crab’ offers a gracious interior dining room and a veranda. From the wooden seating areas accented with orange linen to mimic the restaurant’s championed fare, to crab claw plants that serve as décor, a crab inspired theme is maintained throughout. The open floor plan offers views of the wok-stationed kitchen.

As you sop up garlic chili crab with wood-fired roast bread, heliconia flowers conjure up gracious thoughts…
