Royal College vs St. Thomas’ College - 140th Battle of the Blues

Harking back to 1879, the legendary match between Royal College and St. Thomas', more commonly known as 'Roy-Tho', has marked itself as one of the biggest and oldest Battles in the island and the 2nd longest cricket series in the world. Make your way over to the 'Sinhalese Sports Club' grounds for their 140th encounter yet which will see one of the renowned colleges walk away with the winner's title.

Why You Should Go

With the results at present tallying up to 35 wins for Royal College and 34 for St. Thomas’ College, all eyes are on the 140th encounter in anticipation of which Alma Mater claims the Rt. Honourable D. S. Senanayake Memorial Shield. Leading the teams will be wicket-keepers; left handed opening batsman and stumper Sithara Hapuhinna for St. Thomas’ College and middle-order batsman Kavindu Madarasinghe for Royal College.

Earning its name from the school colours of its present players Royal College and St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, ‘Battle of the Blues’ brims with pomp and pageantry. Decorated flags, tents and signature school colours adorn the grounds making for an inspiring display of school loyalty as the cricket teams face off once again for the 140th time.

As is tradition, the charitable initiative ‘Play For A Cause’ is honoured; ‘Dialog’ contributes LKR 1,000 for every run scored and LKR 10,000 for each wicket that falls at the match’s end. The funds will be donated for the development of cricket facilities in schools in need, in a bid to encourage one and all to engage in a game of such exhilarating sport.
