Nilaveli Beach

Nilaveli, literally translated from Tamil as the ‘open land of moon shine’, is home to one of the most iconic and flawless stretch of beach strips in Sri Lanka. Nilaveli beach has been widely regarded as the best beach destination on the East coast and, arguably, the entire country due to great accommodation options and endless opportunities to partake in water sports activities like swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and even fishing. The close proximity of Pigeon Island National Park just adds into the list of reasons for being the best beach destination.

Best known for:

  • Social and Relaxation: It is a no brainer for anyone to realize that Nilaveli beach is best known for its sun kissed beaches perfect for sitting by the beach and sunbathing while sipping a refreshing beverage.
  • Nature and Outdoors: The addition of the Pigeon Island National Park opened in 1963, just offshore of the beach, with its unique flora and fauna makes it all the more enticing to learn about the diverse wildlife of the country.
  • Sports and Recreation: The relatively calm sea means the endless opportunities to partake in some exciting water sports activities such as casual swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and even fishing.

Interesting facts:

  • Although a major tourist attraction in the present, it was in fact a strategic location for the British during the Second World War.
  • Many remnants of the colonial past can still be seen in the form of shipwrecks, especially when engaging in some water sports as a result of the British fleet taking refuge in the nearby Trincomalee harbor that was once attacked by the Japanese
  • Pigeon Island National Park, just offshore, too served initially as a shooting range for the British soldiers.

Seasons, times and tips:

  • The season to visit the beach spans from March to October due to the favourable tropical weather and calm beaches that are experienced in the area.
  • The best time to visit the beach is during the mornings since it is possible to do most of the water sports by the end of the day.
  • The beach is generally quite crowded, especially during the peak season.
  • Make sure you keep a watchful eye on your belongings as it could get misplaced due to the crowd. The lesser things you bring, there is little to go wrong.
  • Make sure you ask for a cost breakdown when taking part in any water sports in order to avoid any surprise charges.

Looking for the ultimate beach paradise? Nilaveli beach is the place to be for you to experience the ultimate beach holiday in Sri Lanka.
