Around and About

The Palmyra-sprinkled village of Passikudah unravels a world of serenity and sunshine. Lapping up the liquid gold of the tropical sun, the Indian Ocean offers calm waters that are safe to swim in. The shallow waters stretch far out into the blue, leaving one mesmerized by the distance when looking back at the shore. In a stroll away is the untouched village of Kalkudah who share the same temperament as Passikudah – tranquil and sunny. Teeming in the turquoise domicile of the Bay of Passikudah, laced by a magical line of corals, is the vibrant spectacle of marine life. Deeper in the waters are the great ghosts of the deeps: the mighty sunken ships from days gone by, making Passikudah a diver’s utopia.

An hour’s drive from Passikudah will take you to the town of Batticaloa where a charming lagoon curves into a land dotted with colonial landmarks such as the Batticaloa Lighthouse, Clock Tower, Dutch Fort and old cathedrals. Vibrant Hindu temples take shape amidst coconut plantations and rice fields. Exotic birds frequent the lagoon while crowds of fishing boats of Kallady whisk into a colourful photo like one you see on a glossy magazine.

After a couple of days in the beguiling sun, you’re leaving Passikudah. Serene Palm trees stand in dark silhouette against the blue-green skyline. In the rearview mirror, they shrink into the distance. You play with the palmyra keepsakes bought yesterday at a sun-soaked stall. What a memory from the Passikudah days…
