Galle Face Hotel

Set in the heart of the capital’s bustling metropolis, Galle Face Hotel has remained a local landmark ever since it was built in 1864.  Packed with colonial charm and designed to take full advantage of its view, this peaceful oasis occupies a prime piece of land overlooking the Indian Ocean.  Its central location makes it ideal for those looking to take in the city’s sights, or for business travellers looking for a stay with some character.

One of the oldest hotels east of Suez, Galle Face Hotel has played host to an array of celebrities over the decades, from Mahatma Gandhi to Yuri Gagarin, together with several presidents and royals in between.  Guests can find little knick-knacks of historical information about famous visitors, among other things, scattered throughout the hotel.

Built so several of the rooms enjoy excellent views of the ocean, the hotel has been recently refurbished, although it retains a suitably olde-worlde feel.  There’s a gym, a spa and a wonderful salt water swimming pool, as well as a choice of restaurants and dining venues on site.

Sunset from the veranda, with its stunning views over the Indian Ocean, deserves a special mention and is perfect enjoyed with a leisurely afternoon tea or with early evening sundowners.
