Cinnamon Lodge Habarana

Coming into view through the green-capped, bosky landscape of Habarana is ‘Cinnamon Lodge’, a luxury rustic escape by ‘Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts’. Emerging from the fecund earth of the North Central Province, the 5-star eco resort is set in the golden heart of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, 190-KM from Colombo.

Best Known For

Bringing to life the arts and architecture behind the mesmerizing ancient palaces of the Island, the resort stands on what can be called a replication of the foundations of Ritigala, an ancient monastery, today in ruins. Refashioning the concept of royal palaces of yore, to complement the stylishness associated with modern traveling, the resort presents a cluster of sumptuous private dwellings, fastidiously appointed to please even a royal. A soothing, balmy tranquility reigns the surroundings.

The Experience

Reposing on 37 acres of lush land where once flourished a Chena cultivation, the resort is now a saga of green life with over 2000 trees. A sanctuary for hundreds of exotic birds, ‘Cinnamon Lodge’ has many trails and pathways that lead to the hush and beauty of sylvan life, fallen under green canopies.

Echoing the raised foundations of Ritigala, the rooms are placed on elevated platforms. The superior rooms are sprinkled on the prolific gardens, taking up spaces on a zigzag of pathways. Peering at the shining lake on the border, the rooms are furnished with chic décor. The deluxe rooms, charms of timber and terracotta floors, are elegantly outfitted with a bathtub. The king size beds are placed on lifted podiums, mirroring the bedroom of an ancient regal castle. The two-storey deluxe suites are embellished with two bedrooms, dressing room, lounge and dining area and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi. Named ‘Ebony’, ‘Satin’, ‘Ivy’ and ‘Cedar’, each of the 4 deluxe suites pays homage to a botanical classic. The 2 single floor superior suites baptized ‘Banyan’ and ‘Tamarind’ create the mood for endless dreaming amidst swaying greenery.

The green-resort’s home-harvested goodness is rustled up into tantalizing meals through time-honoured, traditional cooking crafts. ‘Ehala’, the open air buffet restaurant dishes out a selection of Sri Lankan cuisine, along with a fine assortment of international dishes. After your meal, head over to the ‘Naughty Room’ and delight in its dessert rituals. The ‘Tuskers’, christened after the splendid Sri Lankan Elephants that dwell the nearby wilds of Minneriya, is the lounge bar of ‘Cinnamon Lodge’. Hearkening back to colonial times, the bar is stunningly furnished with elegant timber columns while ceiling fans move slowly as if brooding over the glory of the olden days. As the sun sinks down to the bosky woods of Habarana, the bar is illuminated with quaint lanterns. ‘The Lotus’ creates a fantastic experience along the concept of ‘organic fine dining’. Head over to the farm and take your pick from a myriad of organic options and the creative chefs will shape the harvest into a hearty meal. Or don a chef’s hat and get behind the stove to help the chefs whip up your dinner. ‘The Veranda’ is the tea house / bistro of ‘Cinnamon Lodge’. Nestled on a lovely spot with a view of the pool, aromatic teas are served along with light meals, amidst birdsongs. The resort also offers captivating location dining experiences; scenic brekkie by the lake, starlight dinner on a treetop, lunch on a faded catamaran and dinner on the pier being a few highlights.

Basking in an aura of floral notes, the ‘Azmaara Spa’ is tucked away in the furthest edge of ‘Cinnamon Lodge’. The spa menu is filled with treatments designed to soothe your body and mind, such as Balinese massages, pedicures and manicures and body scrubs. Amidst the Balinese-garden-home-like tranquility of the spa sits a sauna, steam room and treatment rooms.

Leave those agendas behind and make a splash in the swimming pool while your kids delight in the see-saw and swings of the kids play area.

The in house gift shop at ‘Cinnmon Lodge’ presents an exquisite collection of souvenirs including quaint whim-whams, beguiling crafts and colourful traditional clothes, sourced from local artisans.

Around and About

A 30-minutes’ drive from Habarana will have you taking in the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya where ruins of palaces, water and boulder gardens and royal ponds landscape into a splendorous citadel and the Dambulla Cave Temple where Buddha statues and murals roll into a fascinating old epoch in caves hugging the landscape.
