Just a stone’s throw away from Havelock Town, Wellawatte and Nugegoda suburbs in the outskirts of Colombo the Thawalama restaurant is as Sri Lankan as they come.  Thawalama is completed with simple clay walls, strictly plain wooden tables and chairs and woven mats of dried leaves on the roof alone that will make one feel as if they’ve stepped through a portal into a rural village.  What drives home, on the contrary, is the mouth-watering aroma of just-cooked curries displayed in traditional wide rimmed clay pots.

There is usually a range of roughly 10 curries to make a choice from however, the standard serving consists of any four curries of choosing.  Anything beyond that mark will be charged for separately.  The Thawalama’s menu offers chicken, fish and eggs as their standard proteins, while rest of the curries depend on what vegetables are in season or are available in the market.

While their regulars are mostly drawn to their local rice and curry, Thawalama also serves Mongolian, Thai and Chinese set menus (which they’re willing to adjust on request) as options for someone looking for a different flavour.  While they may not be defined as authentic or traditional, it definitely has the signature look and taste of what goes for being Chinese or Thai food at typical Sri Lankan street food joints.

At Thawalama visitors can either opt to take their food to go or eat at the venue itself, in which event their food will be presented with a distinct touch of Sri Lanka tradition on lotus leaf covered plate.  This eatery in Kohuwala draws in a constant flow of clientele of which most of whom are regulars that have come to love and crave their authentic take on Sri Lanka Rice and Curry.
