A time of great excitement and festivity, this universal festival celebrated across the world holds much significance in the Christian calendar.  Also known as ‘X-mas,’ ‘Noel’ and ‘Yule,’ this annual event is both a religious and cultural function held on the 25th of December.

Christmas is the official day set to commemorate the birth of the founder of Christianity, Lord Jesus Christ, even though biblical scholars believe that Jesus in all probability may have been born during the first half of the year.  The festival of Christmas has been traditionally and continuously observed by both Christians, for the religious significance of it, and non-Christians, for the festivities associated with this grand fiesta.

In many parts of the world, including Sri Lanka, the 24th of December, known as Christmas Eve, is an equally important day, during which, Christmas midnight mass and services are held in many churches in honour of the birth of Christ.  Most churches are decorated during this time and participants at these ceremonies are dressed in colourful and festive clothing, keeping in line with the joyous tone of the day.  A morning mass or service is held for those who prefer to celebrate this joyous occasion on Christmas morn.

A good number of Sri Lankan Christians spend Christmas day with friends and family, over a scrumptious Christmas lunch or dinner.  Alongside this happens the exchange of gifts!  As the day of festivity closes in, homes are adorned with tasteful Christmas décor which includes Christmas trees, wreaths and cribs.  Many hotels and restaurants offer exclusive buffets and dinners during this period, while media channels air related programs to keep viewers entertained all day.

True to the slogan, ‘tis the season to be jolly’ during this season a wide array of special promotions, offers, discounts and gifts for food, beverages, clothes, accessories, gift items and the like, are offered in preparation for the joyful day ahead.  As the season of Christmas draws near most shops and roadsides of Colombo light up in vibrant decorations to perk up the jubilant momentum in town!

Christmas is a season that evokes the creative souls out of slumber.  Falling in line with the joyous season many events such as carol services, nativity plays (enactments of the birth story of Christ), Christmas concerts, musicals and plays organised by schools, universities, churches and other secular organisations take place during the month of December.

Lively and energetic Christmas parties, dinner dances, fairs, carnivals and other gleeful gatherings organised by various government and private entities are another highlight in the island nation during this time.

On a different note, it is also the time to give generously to those in need.  Many charity programs hosted during this season, welcome anyone to contribute and spread the spirit of Christmas with the less fortunate.

To quote Taylor Caldwell, “this is the message of Christmas: we are never alone.”  With all the delightful excitement filling the air during Christmas season, there is always a reason to celebrate in this breathtaking paradise island!
